Appositive Phrase Quiz
What is an Appositive Phrase?
An appositive phrase is a group of words that renames, identifies, or explains a noun in a sentence. It gives extra information about the noun, often set off by commas.
Structure:
An appositive phrase usually comes right after the noun it describes.
- Noun + Appositive Phrase
Example: My brother, a skilled guitarist, plays in a band.
Here, “a skilled guitarist” renames “my brother.”
Examples:
- The insect, a large cockroach, is crawling on the wall.
- Paris, the capital of France, is a beautiful city.
- My best friend, Sarah, is moving to Canada.
- The teacher assigned Oliver Twist, a novel by Charles Dickens.
Types of Appositives:
- Restrictive Appositive (essential, no commas):
- Example: My friend Lisa is coming over.
- “Lisa” is necessary to know which friend.
2. Nonrestrictive Appositive (extra, with commas):
- Example: My friend, a skilled painter, won a prize.
- “A skilled painter” adds extra info but isn’t essential.
Why Use Appositive Phrases?
- To make writing clearer and more descriptive
- To add details without making a new sentence
- To avoid repetition
