Advanced Connectors

Connectors are words or phrases that link clauses or sentences together. They can be used to show addition, contrast, cause and effect, and other relationships between ideas.

There are two main types of connectors: coordinating connectors and subordinating connectors.

Coordinating connectors

Coordinating connectors are used to link two independent clauses together. They include words like “and,” “but,” “or,” “nor,” “yet,” and “for.”

For example:

  • I like to read books, and I also like to watch movies.
  • I wanted to go to the park, but it was raining.
  • Do you want to go to the movies or the museum?

Subordinating connectors

Subordinating connectors are used to link an independent clause to a dependent clause. They include words like “after,” “although,” “because,” “if,” “since,” and “when.”

  • Although I was tired, I went to the party.
  • I will go to the park if it is not raining.

  • Moreover: This connector is similar to “furthermore,” but it can be used to add more emphasis.
  • In addition: This connector can be used to add another item to a list.
  • Consequently: This connector can be used to show the result of something.
  • Therefore: This connector is similar to “consequently,” but it can be used to express a stronger connection between cause and effect.
  • Thus: This connector can be used to show the conclusion of an argument.
  • In fact: This connector can be used to emphasize a point.
  • As a matter of fact: This connector is similar to “in fact,” but it can be used to add more emphasis.
  • Actually: This connector can be used to correct or add information to a previous statement.
