3. You have three apples and take away two. How many apples do you have?

Answer: 7.5 degrees.
5. A family has two parents and six sons. Each son has one sister. How many people are in the family?
Answer: Nine people: two parents, six sons, and one daughter.
6. You are running a race and pass the person in second place. What position are you in?
Answer: Second place.
7. A basket contains six eggs. Six people each take one egg, but one egg remains in the basket. How?

Logic Problem Riddles
11. You are standing before two doors. One leads to safety and one leads to danger. Two guards stand there. One always tells the truth, and one always lies. You may ask one guard one question. What should you ask?
Answer: Ask either guard, “Which door would the other guard say leads to safety?” Then choose the opposite door.
12. There are three switches outside a room and one light bulb inside. You can enter the room only once. How can you determine which switch controls the bulb?
Answer: Turn on the first switch for a few minutes, then turn it off. Turn on the second switch and enter the room. If the bulb is on, it is controlled by the second switch. If it is off but warm, it is controlled by the first. If it is off and cold, it is controlled by the third.
13. Four people need to cross a bridge at night. They have one flashlight, and only two people can cross at a time. Their crossing times are 1, 2, 7, and 10 minutes. What is the fastest total time?
Answer: 17 minutes.
14. You have a 3-liter jug and a 5-liter jug. How can you measure exactly 4 liters?
Answer: Fill the 5-liter jug and pour it into the 3-liter jug. Two liters remain. Empty the 3-liter jug, transfer the 2 liters into it, then fill the 5-liter jug again and pour 1 liter into the 3-liter jug. Four liters remain in the 5-liter jug.
15. You have two ropes. Each takes exactly one hour to burn, but they burn unevenly. How can you measure exactly 45 minutes?
Answer: Light both ends of one rope and one end of the other. The first rope burns in 30 minutes. Then light the second end of the remaining rope. It will burn for another 15 minutes.
16. There are several bottles, and exactly one contains poison. You have test strips that can identify poison after several hours. How could you identify the bottle using a binary testing strategy?
Answer: Number the bottles and assign each bottle a unique binary pattern. Test samples according to the binary positions, then use the pattern of positive results to identify the poisoned bottle.
17. Three prisoners are given hats that are either black or white. Each can see the others’ hats but not their own. They are told at least one hat is black. After silence, one prisoner correctly identifies his hat. How?
Answer: He reasons from what the others would have said if his hat were white and concludes that his hat must be black.
18. A farmer needs to cross a river with a wolf, a goat, and a cabbage. The boat can carry the farmer and only one item. How can he transport all three safely?
Answer: Take the goat across, return alone, take the wolf across, bring the goat back, take the cabbage across, return alone, then take the goat across.
19. You have 100 light bulbs and 100 people. Person 1 changes every bulb, person 2 changes every second bulb, person 3 every third bulb, and so on. Which bulbs remain on?
Answer: The bulbs whose numbers are perfect squares.
20. Two candles each burn for exactly one hour, but unevenly. How can you measure 30 minutes?

Hard Problem Riddles
41. There are three boxes labeled Apples, Oranges, and Apples & Oranges. Every label is wrong. You may take one fruit from one box. How can you correctly label all three?
Answer: Take a fruit from the box labeled Apples & Oranges. Since all labels are wrong, that box must contain only apples or only oranges. Use that fruit to identify it, then determine the other two labels by elimination.
42. You have nine identical-looking coins, but one is heavier. Using a balance scale only twice, how can you find it?
Answer: Divide the coins into three groups of three. Weigh two groups. If one is heavier, the heavy coin is in that group; otherwise it is in the third group. Then weigh two coins from the suspected group to identify the heavier one.
43. Three travelers check into a hotel and pay $30. The hotel later realizes the correct price is $25. The clerk sends back $5, but the bellboy keeps $2 and gives each traveler $1. Where is the missing dollar?
Answer: There is no missing dollar. The travelers paid $27 after receiving $3 back. That $27 consists of $25 for the room plus $2 kept by the bellboy.
44. A prisoner must choose between two doors. One leads to freedom and one to danger. One guard lies and one tells the truth. What single question guarantees the correct choice?
Answer: Ask, “Which door would the other guard say leads to freedom?” Then choose the opposite door.
