What Are Stative Verbs?
Stative verbs (also called state verbs) describe a condition, situation, or state of being—not an action. They often refer to:
- Thoughts and opinions (e.g., know, believe, understand)
- Emotions (e.g., love, hate, prefer)
- Possession (e.g., have, own, belong)
- Senses (e.g., smell, hear, taste when describing the state)
- Appearance or existence (e.g., seem, appear, be)
Examples:
- ✅ I know the answer.
❌ I am knowing the answer. - ✅ She loves chocolate.
❌ She is loving chocolate. (Unless in marketing: “I’m loving it!”) - ✅ This book belongs to me.
❌ This book is belonging to me.
Important Rule:
Stative verbs are not usually used in the continuous (–ing) form, because they describe something that just is, rather than something that is happening.
