Put Words Into Someone’s Mouth

Meaning:

Attributing an opinion to someone who has never stated that opinion

Examples:

  • I never said you should leave – don't put words in my mouth.
  • I didn't mean that at all -- you're just putting words into my mouth!
  • He accused the interviewer of putting words into his mouth.
  • You're putting words into her mouth. You don't know what she thinks.
