Hemicycle [noun]

In the hemicycle the committee benches had disappeared; they had run parallel to the sections on the arc of a circle.

The hemicycle became the apse; the gallery, a clerestory; the hall, a central nave.

Above the terrace of the recesses, rose that of the Hemicycle.

In the hemicycle above are the Virgin and Child under a Byzantine canopy with angels and founders on either side.

His greatest work, however, and one which won him much fame, is his well-known Hemicycle in the Beaux Arts (p. 319).

But the hemicycle was not easy to make unless it were fairly small, and, if small, it was not very easy to read.

It can be seen that this and similar great dials were applications of the hemicycle idea on a large scale.

On the other hand, the Hemicycle remained the common form of the instrument all through the classic period and even afterwards.

The defect of the Hemicycle, as this hollow type of dial was called, was that it could not be read accurately for short intervals.

But let us step on to the hemicycle of the Belvedere, and view some works greater than any we have yet seen or even imagined.
