Thermae [noun]

Ruins of the thermae of Caracalla and of Titus are still standing.

Equally remarkable was the Roman system for supplying their city, their thermae, and their 1350 street fountains with pure water.

Within the town are remains of thermae on the north of the Via Appia and of a theatre opposite, on the south.

It leaves on the right the great Thermae of Constantine, of which the Austrians have cleared out the south-east part.

The public baths and thermae were under the more immediate superintendence of the aediles.

The arrangements of the thermae were mainly those of the balneae on a larger scale.

In the largest of the thermae there was a stadium for the games of the young men, with raised seats for the spectators.

A more definite idea of the thermae can be best got by an examination of the accompanying plan of the baths of Caracalla (fig. 5).

In the great Roman thermae (baths) they were of large size, and like apses were covered with a hemispherical vault.

Where would be the beauty of our Thermae, if those softest waters were not supplied to them?
